Larger swept area and advanced airfoil design build on the proven Skystream platform
KANSAS CITY, Kan., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Skystream Energy today announced it is developing and testing a new wind turbine blade designed to generate more energy across a wider range of wind conditions.

The new blade builds on the proven Skystream platform with a larger swept area and a custom blend of wind tunnel-tested airfoils. These advancements are intended to increase overall energy production by more efficiently capturing energy from light and turbulent winds while helping the turbine better manage output at higher wind speeds. The design is also expected to reduce turbine noise. A prototype is currently installed at a test site in Iowa, where Skystream is collecting performance data.
“Customers continue to look for ways to generate more of their own energy across a wider range of wind conditions,” said Ryan Loiacono, General Manager of Skystream Energy. “This new blade is an important step in that direction. We’re building on what has made Skystream successful while continuing to improve the technology and expand the environments where distributed wind can make sense.”
Designed to Capture More Energy
One of the primary objectives of the new blade is to increase energy production at lower wind speeds. Its larger size creates a greater swept area – the total area covered by the rotating blades — allowing the turbine to capture more energy from available wind.
The blade development process has included collaboration with wind energy consultant Dr. Kyle K. Wetzel of Wetzel Wind Energy Services, who has experience designing blades for both large and small wind applications.
Together, the larger swept area and advanced airfoil design are intended to increase energy production across light, moderate and turbulent wind conditions, while providing greater control at higher wind speeds. The new blade may offer benefits when retrofitted at existing sites where wind conditions have historically limited energy production.
Testing now underway will help Skystream quantify these improvements and establish final performance specifications.
Built on Decades of Skystream Experience
Development of the new blade also draws on extensive field experience with the existing Skystream platform.
Todd Hammen of Iowa Energy Alternatives, LLC collaborated with Wetzel Wind Energy Services on the new blade design and is supporting prototype testing at Iowa Energy Alternatives in Iowa. Hammen has worked with Skystream technology for more than 20 years through dealership, contract and direct employment roles and has extensive experience servicing, rebuilding and testing small wind turbines.
“Having worked with Skystream turbines in the field for many years, I’ve seen firsthand what makes this turbine unique,” said Hammen. “This new blade gives us an opportunity to build on a turbine with a strong track record while finding ways to capture more energy across a broader range of wind conditions. It’s exciting to see the technology continue to evolve.”
Skystream turbines have been deployed around the world for residential, agricultural, commercial, educational and community applications, as well as remote and hybrid microgrid systems.
Development and Testing Continue
Skystream will continue collecting data from the prototype installation as overall product development progresses. Final performance specifications, production timing, and commercial availability will be announced following completion of the development and testing process.
The existing Skystream 3.7 remains available for distributed wind projects and continues to provide a proven option for customers seeking on-site wind generation today.
“We’ve learned a tremendous amount from Skystream installations operating in the field over the years,” Loiacono added. “This development is about applying that experience to what comes next, continuing to improve the technology while maintaining the simplicity, reliability, and versatility that have defined Skystream.”
Additional updates will be shared as testing and development progress.
